My Top Books

Hello everyone!
I thought it would be a fun idea to share my favorites. It's hard for me to narrow this category down, so it tends to change often. Here, I have narrowed it down to my top five. These are the books I have read over and over again. Some I  have loved for a long time, and a couple I have fallen in love with recently.

NOS4A2: Joe Hill

Charlie is a twisted invader of innocence in this novel, and after reading it for the first time, I've had a few nightmares about his character. The basic concept of Charlie, is to hope your children survive. He pulls up in his 1938 Rolls-Royce Wraith and tells kids about Christmasland. The license plate reading NOS4A2, which is supposedly making us compare Charlie to the chilling silent movie, "Nosferatu." The adaptation of Bram Stoker's "Dracula."
This novel has many references to some amazing outside sources. The biggest reference being to Batman, and they're fun to pinpoint, so I'll leave that up to you. Let me know how many you find.

INTENSITY: Dean Koontz

Intensity is my most read novel on my bookcase. It's binding has been folded over more times than I dare to count.
This novel is just as it states. It's intense. A serial killer on the loose, and the main character Chyna hot on his trails. When it comes to a strong female lead, this is the book that comes to mind. Maybe that's why I love it so much!

TWELFTH NIGHT: William Shakespeare

Let's steer away from the thriller's a moment.  If you like a funny read, one of Shakespeare's comedies are the way to go. Twelfth Night stands out from the crowd as being his funniest play. I always tell myself, if the opportunity brought itself, I would audition for the role of Viola.
Shakespeare's works are sometimes hard for readers to comprehend, and that's understandable. It took me a few years to be able to read Shakespeare without a dictionary or computer near by. Even today I'll find something I don't understand, and look it up. If you want to become decent at reading his plays, all you have to do is practice. When you get past all that, this play is hilarious! Don't just read it, I recommend seeing this one as well.

SHATTERED SOULS: Mary Lindsey
Now, let's take a dive back into the supernatural. You've read about NOS4A2, and now it's time for an awesome ghost story. Shattered Souls  was a unexpected favorite. I found it at the library by accident. It dropped on the floor while I pulled one from the shelf. I judged this book by it's cover, and found it beautiful. As I started reading, it immediately grabbed my attention. The main character Lenzi thinks she's crazy, but finds out that there is more to her voices than meets the eye. She then has to come to grips with her new reality with her "partner in crime" Alden. They go through an amazing adventure together. After reading the library's copy, I had to get one for myself.  It's a fun read!

METEMORPHOSIS: Franz Kafka
Last, but certainly not least. I found this story not too long ago, in a class during the Spring semester.  It was on short stories, as you can probably tell. On the left, is the book we used. It has all kinds of fabulous stories from A to Z. There were plenty of amazing stories to go around, but one of my favorites turned out to be Kafka's "Metamorphosis."
I had never read anything like it before, and it interested me. Can you imagine waking up as a bug? The main character doesn't even question his transformation, but thinks about how it will effect the people around him. I now understand where the idea for the movie, "The Fly" came from.

I hope you enjoyed some of my favorites, and that you pick some of these up for yourself. Thanks for reading!

What's your favorite novel, poem or short story?

  1. I LOVE "Shattered Souls"! Did you read the "sequel"? Not as good as the first, but still pretty good :)
